What is lens replacement surgery?

Lens replacement surgery (also called Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE) is a sophisticated development of cataract surgery, one of the world’s most frequently performed surgical procedure. The natural lens of the eye is permanently replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) and typically takes 20 minutes per eye.
The procedure is a safe and permanent way to correct both short or long-sightedness, and prevent or remove cataract.

Who qualifies for natural lens replacement?

Lens replacement surgery is ideal for patients who are diagnosed with the eye conditions or problems listed below.

  • Cataract
  • Astigmatism
  • Presyopia
  • Long-sightedness (Hyperopia)
  • Short-sightedness (Myopia)
  • Dependence on bifocal, varifocal or multifocal contact lenses or glasses

Trifocal lenses

Trifocal lenses, the so-called smart lenses, have long been used by specialists in cataract operations. Intraocular lenses are divided into two groups: monofocal and multifocal. The third (intelligent) lenses have 3 foci. After this operation, patients can read books, use computers and watch TV without glasses.

3 focused lenses called smart lenses has been one of the most widely used methods in our country for about 3-4 years. Multifocal lenses were generally used prior to trifocal lenses. However, when problems related to the mean distance arose with these lenses, the transition to trifocal lenses was made. The main advantage of these lenses is that they offer tremendous advantages at medium distance. This feature, which was not available with the previous lenses, was realized with trifocal lenses.

What are these lenses used for?

Trifocal lenses provide good far, near and medium distance vision. To use this lens, patients must have cataracts. The fact that the patients are not suitable for laser treatment also allows this method to be used. The trifocal lens treatment lasts a maximum of 10 minutes per eye. During this process, the patient does not feel any pain. The patient’s biological lens is removed during the operation and the smart lenses, trifocal lenses, are inserted. After this operation, the patient can continue his normal life. However, it is still necessary to avoid heavy activity for up to 20 days. Trifocal lenses stay in the eye for a lifetime. These lenses can be used successfully on all patients with near and far vision problems.

Refractive lens exchange
The safest painless method for correction of eye defects from the age of 45

Modern technology
Thanks to the wide range of our surgical services, we can offer you the surgical method that will eliminate your unwanted dioptres, ensure you a life without glasses and with a long-term effect. It is a refractive lens exchange. This procedure is performed on those patients who no longer want to wear glasses or contact lenses, but are unfortunately no longer suitable for laser surgery because they are over 45 years of age. However, just like laser operations, this modern procedure is painless, precise and the healing time is less than 24 hours.

The safest painless method for correcting ocular defects from the age of 40
“Safety First” always applies to our clinic! We take our responsibility very seriously to inform our clients about the best and correct treatment method. This also means that not every client is suitable for laser eye surgery – this applies in particular to patients who are over 45 years old and suffer from presbyopia. Why is that? From the age of 45, the dioptric error returns after a short time, even after a laser operation – ie. You would only see clearly for a short period of time only to suffer from your ametropia again. That is why we reject laser surgery in most cases in patients over 45 years of age.

In this case too, the MAPA Eye Clinic offers you an effective operation: refractive lens exchange!
“Refractive lens exchange” means that your natural lens is replaced by a new, artificial, special multifocal lens. This procedure is identical to cataract surgery and is therefore one of the safest and most frequently performed operations on the human body. The only difference is that in this procedure, instead of a cloudy lens, a dysfunctional lens is removed and replaced with a new lens, which compensates for the ametropia. Thanks to the absolutely safe and painless lens implantation method, it is also possible for people over 45 to finally get rid of their annoying glasses and see every little detail exactly. And this also applies to presbyopia, the so-called presbyopia. Thanks to the lens implantation and multifocal lenses, you no longer need varifocals or reading glasses. You can see sharply again, both near and far.

Lens Implantation – What Exactly Is It?
It is a simple, painless outpatient procedure that we at the MAPA Eye Clinic use for those clients who not only need glasses for reading, but also for distance – this “presbyopia” usually occurs in people from 45 years of age. The procedure only takes a few minutes and is performed using local anesthesia. The first eye is operated on, followed by the second a few days later. One speaks here of the so-called “Refractive Lens Exchange”. During a lens implantation procedure, our specialists remove the original lens using the classic method, phacoemulsification, and place a new multifocal lens in its place. That gives you three advantages. Because this multifocal lens improves your vision at all three distances – in the near, far and intermediate areas! It enables you to see the whole picture clearly and distinctly, usually without glasses.

FEMTO – What exactly is it?
Originally, the femtosecond laser was used for the laser correction of ametropia. Today, it also ensures increased safety during refractive lens exchange and cataract surgery. The femtosecond laser CATALYS was the only laser – in contrast to many other lasers that are used in refractive surgery – specially designed for the operation of lens replacement. The laser replaces the surgeon’s scalpel and thus ensures an unprecedented level of precision and safety in the procedure. The classic method of phacoemulsification requires the surgeon to incise the cornea with a scalpel and create a circular opening in the front of the lens capsule. The hard lens is then shredded with ultrasound and suctioned off, after which the new artificial lens can be implanted. With the Femto method, the CATALYS laser takes over these cuts and the shredding of the lens, which makes the entire procedure much gentler and more precise. Here, too, you benefit from all three advantages thanks to the multifocal lens! Your eyesight is clearly improved at all three distances – in the near, far and intermediate range. The Femto thus enables the patient to see the entire image clearly and distinctly, usually without glasses.

At the MAPA Eye Clinic, we use the world’s most recognized premium lenses in combination with the femtosecond laser. This is how we achieve the highest precision, the best result and the lowest complication rate when correcting your visual defect.

Lens implants
At the MAPA Eye Clinic, we attach great importance to both the high quality of professional care for our patients and the selection of the most suitable lens implants. That is the reason why we only offer you implants from the two best quality manufacturers who are world leaders not only in production and quality, but also in the development of lens implants. All lens implants that we use at our clinic are made from a soft, hydrophobic acrylic. They are easily foldable and can therefore be implanted through minimal incisions. The most modern design and material of the artificial lenses ensure the best possible eyesight and reduce the risk of secondary cataracts. Because of this, careful implant selection is a very important step in achieving long-term results and continued satisfaction.
