What your journey feels like

Day by day with bariatric surgery in Istanbul

Bariatric surgery is a major operation and requires a 5- to 7-day stay. Here is the typical schedule — your individual journey depends on the procedure (sleeve, bypass, balloon), starting condition and healing.

DAY 1

Arrival & pre-op assessment

  • 08:30
    Landing in Istanbul

Mapa driver in arrivals with a "Mapa Health" sign.

  • 11:00
    Hotel check-in

5-star partner hotel near the hospital.

  • 14:00
    Clinic: pre-op assessment

Blood tests, ECG, lung function, endoscopy, anaesthesia consultation. Confirmation of the planned procedure (sleeve or bypass).

  • 18:00
    Last meal

Fasting from midnight. The pre-op liver diet has ideally already been started at home.

DAY 2

Surgery day

  • 07:00
    Hospital admission

Admission examination, consent, gown. You have time for questions.

  • 09:00
    Bariatric surgery

General anaesthesia, laparoscopic (5 small incisions). Sleeve or bypass takes 60 to 90 minutes. You wake up in recovery without consciously experiencing the procedure.

  • 13:00
    First hours

Mobilisation (standing, a few steps) is important to prevent thrombosis. Pain control with IV medication.

  • 20:00
    First sips of water

After radiological leak test you may take small sips of water.

DAY 3-5

Hospital & hotel

  • Day 3
    Abdominal pain eases

You can walk longer distances on the hospital corridor. Clear liquids in small sips — water, unsweetened tea, clear broth.

  • Day 4
    Hospital discharge

Off to the hotel with pain medication, anti-thrombosis injections, vitamins and a diet plan. Mapa staff check on you regularly.

  • Day 5
    Hotel recovery

Liquid diet continues, lots of sleep, short walks. Wound check at the clinic.

DAY 6-7

Travel clearance & trip home

  • Day 6
    Final follow-up

Blood tests, wound check, final medical examination. Written surgical report, vitamin prescription, diet plan, travel clearance.

  • Day 7+
    Trip home

Compression stockings for the flight, movement on the plane, plenty of fluids. First follow-up with your GP at home after 1 week.

What if...?

"What if complications occur during surgery?"

Bariatric surgery has a low complication rate (1 to 3 percent), but it is not zero. In an emergency the hospital is available 24/7 and the surgeon reachable. A written warranty for re-operation in case of surgery-related complications should be on file before the trip.

"What if I am afraid of general anaesthesia?"

This worry is common. Before surgery you have a thorough talk with the anaesthetist — all pre-existing conditions are discussed. Modern general anaesthesia is very safe; serious complications are rare and monitored. You fall asleep and wake up without experiencing the surgery.

"Travelling alone — can I manage after such major surgery?"

A companion is strongly recommended for the first 5 to 7 days in Istanbul, especially for the trips between hospital and hotel. If you travel alone you receive enhanced Mapa support. WhatsApp hotline is reachable 24/7.

"What if I do not speak Turkish?"

Admission, surgical consent and follow-ups are in English. Hospital nurses communicate via Mapa interpreters. Diet plan and medication list are issued in English for your GP at home.

What you actually experience

Small observations after gastric reduction surgery

No marketing phrases. Short, honest observations — what typically feels like after bariatric surgery during the first days, weeks and months.

Day 1–7

Abdominal pain and tightness in the first 48 to 72 hours are normal — well manageable with pain medication.

Day 1–7

Hunger is completely absent in the first weeks — the stomach no longer sends hunger signals.

Day 1–7

Nausea on the first sip can occur — small sips every 15 minutes help.

Day 1–7

Shoulder pain from the CO₂ gas of laparoscopy is common and passes within 2 to 3 days.

Week 1–6

Diet progression: liquid → puree → soft → solid, each 1 to 2 weeks.

Week 1–6

Tiredness and weakness in the first 2 weeks are expected — the body needs energy for healing.

Week 1–6

The first "no-hunger experience" at the dinner table feels surprising for many patients.

Week 1–6

The first 5 to 8 kg are often lost in the first 2 to 3 weeks.

1–6 months

Main weight loss phase — typically 60 to 70 percent of the expected loss in the first 6 months.

1–6 months

Hair loss from month 3 to 6 is common and reversible — sufficient protein and a multivitamin help.

1–6 months

Loose skin becomes increasingly noticeable, especially on the abdomen, arms and thighs.

1–6 months

Physical activity is possible from week 6 — light training first, then strength training from month 3.

6 months–2 years

Plateau phase after 12 to 18 months — the final weight stabilises.

6 months–2 years

Lifelong vitamin substitution (B12, iron, calcium, multivitamin) becomes routine.

6 months–2 years

Social adjustment when eating with friends — small portions become standard.

6 months–2 years

Plastic surgery for loose skin is possible from month 18 to 24, once the weight is stable.

Observations from medical sources and physician-led aftercare — no patient quotes, no success guarantees. Your individual experience may vary depending on procedure, baseline findings and lifestyle.
Honestly answered

What patients often hesitate to ask

Honest answers on the gastric balloon — temporary effect, regain, realistic expectations.

Gastric balloon or surgery — which is right for me?

A gastric balloon is a non-surgical entry-level option for: BMI 27-35 without comorbidities, a first attempt at weight loss, patients who fear surgery, or as a bridge to surgery in very high BMI. Sleeve or bypass are typically better for: BMI over 35-40, comorbidities like diabetes, or a more durable solution. The balloon helps short-term (6-12 months); surgery is the more lasting option.

How much weight will I realistically lose?

Realistically: 15-25 kg over the 6-12 months the balloon is in place. Compared with surgery, this is less (sleeve: typically 30-35 kg). Without lasting lifestyle change, 50-70% of the lost weight typically returns after balloon removal. The balloon is a tool for losing weight, not for lifelong weight control.

How is the balloon placed and removed?

Placement: endoscopic (a tube via the mouth), under light sedation, 20-30 minutes. The balloon is filled in the stomach with 400-700 ml of saline. Removal after 6-12 months: same method — the balloon is deflated and pulled out. NO surgery, no incisions. A few days of nausea after placement are common.

Will I have nausea or stomach pain?

In the first 3-7 days: significant nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps are common (60-80% of patients) — the stomach has to adjust to the foreign-body sensation. Anti-nausea medication helps. From week 2 things typically normalise. 5-10% of patients do not tolerate the balloon and need early removal.

What if the balloon ruptures?

A rare but documented complication. Modern balloons (Orbera, Allurion) contain a safety dye: if the balloon tears, urine turns blue, alerting you immediately. The balloon may pass through the gut or cause obstruction — endoscopic or surgical removal then becomes necessary. Older balloon models had higher rupture rates.

What about regain after removal?

Without lasting lifestyle change, 50-70% of the weight loss typically returns after removal. Studies show that 6-12 months after removal, only 40-50% of patients maintain their new weight. The balloon is a training phase — those who do not maintain new eating patterns return to their starting weight.

What does a gastric balloon cost in Turkey vs. your home country?

In Western Europe, typically 4,500-7,000 euros; in Turkey, 1,800-3,500 euros for packages (balloon, placement, removal, 6-12 months follow-up). What to look for: balloon brand (Orbera, Allurion are established premium brands), whether removal is included in the price, follow-up with nutrition counselling.

“Gastric sleeve at a BMI of 41. The bariatric team took my comorbidities seriously and ordered extra cardiac tests before approving surgery. Eight months later I am down 38 kg, my blood pressure is normal, and I am off two medications.”

Sarah M.

“I had a gastric balloon as a non-surgical option. The placement was quick and the dietitian followed up by video every two weeks. I lost 18 kg over the six months and learned habits that I have kept after the balloon was removed.”

“Mini gastric bypass after a failed attempt elsewhere. The surgeon explained the differences honestly and warned me about expected loose skin later. Down 45 kg at one year, type 2 diabetes in remission. The nutrition support post-op was the key part.”

Anna K.
Australia · 2025-12
★★★★★

“Sleeve gastrectomy. Hospital stay was three nights, the room was private and the nursing staff spoke English. Pain was less than I expected. The dietitian set up a written plan for three, six, and twelve months — I am still following it.”

Thomas B.
Canada · 2025-11
★★★★★

“Gastric bypass at age 52. I was anxious about anaesthesia at my age — the anaesthetist sat with me the night before to go through everything. Surgery was uneventful, recovery on schedule. 30 kg down at six months and energy back.”

Jane W.
United Kingdom · 2025-10
★★★★★

“Gastric sleeve. What I valued was the long-term plan, not just the surgery. Vitamin protocol, dietitian video calls every month for the first six months, and a clear list of warning signs to watch for. Lost 32 kg and feeling steady.”

Risks & Safety Information

Intragastric balloon is a non-surgical, temporary weight loss device placed endoscopically in the stomach for 6–12 months. It reduces stomach capacity and promotes early satiety without any incisions.

  • Nausea, vomiting, and cramping during the first 3–7 days (most common, treatable)
  • Acid reflux and stomach discomfort during adaptation
  • Balloon deflation and migration (rare with modern designs, <1%)
  • Gastric ulceration if balloon irritates stomach lining
  • Weight regain after balloon removal if lifestyle changes are not maintained
✓ Safety Assurance:

Balloon placement and removal are performed endoscopically under mild sedation (15–20 minutes each). No incisions or general anesthesia required. Modern balloons (Orbera, Spatz3) have adjustable or dual-balloon designs for improved tolerability.

Recovery Timeline

Days 1–3

Nausea and cramping as stomach adjusts. Anti-nausea medication provided. Clear liquids only.

Days 4–14

Symptoms improve. Transition to puréed then soft foods.

Weeks 3–4

Normal eating with reduced portions. Appetite noticeably decreased.

Months 1–12

Active weight loss phase. Dietary coaching and exercise program support. Balloon removed at 6 or 12 months depending on type.
