In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a small gastric pouch (about 30-50 ml) is created and connected directly to a section of the small intestine. Most of the stomach and a portion of the small intestine are "bypassed". Effect: less volume AND less calorie and nutrient absorption. Surgery time 90-120 minutes under general anaesthesia, laparoscopic.

The cost of aesthetic treatments in Turkey ranges between €1,500 and €10,000, depending on factors such as the type of procedure, the clinic's quality, and the expertise of the medical team. While lower prices may seem appealing, it is crucial not to compromise your health. At Mapa Health, we prioritize your safety and deliver exceptional results without cutting corners.

What your journey feels like

Day by day with bariatric surgery in Istanbul

Bariatric surgery is a major operation and requires a 5- to 7-day stay. Here is the typical schedule — your individual journey depends on the procedure (sleeve, bypass, balloon), starting condition and healing.

DAY 1

Arrival & pre-op assessment

  • 08:30
    Landing in Istanbul

Mapa driver in arrivals with a "Mapa Health" sign.

  • 11:00
    Hotel check-in

5-star partner hotel near the hospital.

  • 14:00
    Clinic: pre-op assessment

Blood tests, ECG, lung function, endoscopy, anaesthesia consultation. Confirmation of the planned procedure (sleeve or bypass).

  • 18:00
    Last meal

Fasting from midnight. The pre-op liver diet has ideally already been started at home.

DAY 2

Surgery day

  • 07:00
    Hospital admission

Admission examination, consent, gown. You have time for questions.

  • 09:00
    Bariatric surgery

General anaesthesia, laparoscopic (5 small incisions). Sleeve or bypass takes 60 to 90 minutes. You wake up in recovery without consciously experiencing the procedure.

  • 13:00
    First hours

Mobilisation (standing, a few steps) is important to prevent thrombosis. Pain control with IV medication.

  • 20:00
    First sips of water

After radiological leak test you may take small sips of water.

DAY 3-5

Hospital & hotel

  • Day 3
    Abdominal pain eases

You can walk longer distances on the hospital corridor. Clear liquids in small sips — water, unsweetened tea, clear broth.

  • Day 4
    Hospital discharge

Off to the hotel with pain medication, anti-thrombosis injections, vitamins and a diet plan. Mapa staff check on you regularly.

  • Day 5
    Hotel recovery

Liquid diet continues, lots of sleep, short walks. Wound check at the clinic.

DAY 6-7

Travel clearance & trip home

  • Day 6
    Final follow-up

Blood tests, wound check, final medical examination. Written surgical report, vitamin prescription, diet plan, travel clearance.

  • Day 7+
    Trip home

Compression stockings for the flight, movement on the plane, plenty of fluids. First follow-up with your GP at home after 1 week.

What if...?

"What if complications occur during surgery?"

Bariatric surgery has a low complication rate (1 to 3 percent), but it is not zero. In an emergency the hospital is available 24/7 and the surgeon reachable. A written warranty for re-operation in case of surgery-related complications should be on file before the trip.

"What if I am afraid of general anaesthesia?"

This worry is common. Before surgery you have a thorough talk with the anaesthetist — all pre-existing conditions are discussed. Modern general anaesthesia is very safe; serious complications are rare and monitored. You fall asleep and wake up without experiencing the surgery.

"Travelling alone — can I manage after such major surgery?"

A companion is strongly recommended for the first 5 to 7 days in Istanbul, especially for the trips between hospital and hotel. If you travel alone you receive enhanced Mapa support. WhatsApp hotline is reachable 24/7.

"What if I do not speak Turkish?"

Admission, surgical consent and follow-ups are in English. Hospital nurses communicate via Mapa interpreters. Diet plan and medication list are issued in English for your GP at home.

What you actually experience

Small observations after gastric reduction surgery

No marketing phrases. Short, honest observations — what typically feels like after bariatric surgery during the first days, weeks and months.

Day 1–7

Abdominal pain and tightness in the first 48 to 72 hours are normal — well manageable with pain medication.

Day 1–7

Hunger is completely absent in the first weeks — the stomach no longer sends hunger signals.

Day 1–7

Nausea on the first sip can occur — small sips every 15 minutes help.

Day 1–7

Shoulder pain from the CO₂ gas of laparoscopy is common and passes within 2 to 3 days.

Week 1–6

Diet progression: liquid → puree → soft → solid, each 1 to 2 weeks.

Week 1–6

Tiredness and weakness in the first 2 weeks are expected — the body needs energy for healing.

Week 1–6

The first "no-hunger experience" at the dinner table feels surprising for many patients.

Week 1–6

The first 5 to 8 kg are often lost in the first 2 to 3 weeks.

1–6 months

Main weight loss phase — typically 60 to 70 percent of the expected loss in the first 6 months.

1–6 months

Hair loss from month 3 to 6 is common and reversible — sufficient protein and a multivitamin help.

1–6 months

Loose skin becomes increasingly noticeable, especially on the abdomen, arms and thighs.

1–6 months

Physical activity is possible from week 6 — light training first, then strength training from month 3.

6 months–2 years

Plateau phase after 12 to 18 months — the final weight stabilises.

6 months–2 years

Lifelong vitamin substitution (B12, iron, calcium, multivitamin) becomes routine.

6 months–2 years

Social adjustment when eating with friends — small portions become standard.

6 months–2 years

Plastic surgery for loose skin is possible from month 18 to 24, once the weight is stable.

Observations from medical sources and physician-led aftercare — no patient quotes, no success guarantees. Your individual experience may vary depending on procedure, baseline findings and lifestyle.
Honestly answered

What patients often hesitate to ask

Honest answers on gastric bypass — diabetes remission, vitamin supplementation, alcohol, pregnancy.

Bypass or sleeve — which is medically better for me?

It depends on BMI, comorbidities and lifestyle. Bypass is often preferred for: BMI over 50, type-2 diabetes (bypass often puts diabetes into remission), strong reflux, pre-existing hiatal hernia. Sleeve is often preferred for: BMI 35-45 without strong reflux, preference for simpler anatomy, sport performance considerations. An honest clinic gives an individual recommendation — anyone who says "bypass for everyone" or "sleeve for everyone" is providing incomplete information.

Will bypass really cure my diabetes?

In type-2 diabetes, around 60-80% of patients see diabetes go into remission after bypass — often before significant weight loss, due to hormonal changes in the small intestine. This is a key advantage. BUT: "cure" is not guaranteed, relapse is possible after 5-10 years in 20-30% of patients. Type-1 diabetes is NOT treatable by bypass.

How high is the mortality risk with bypass?

Mortality risk for laparoscopic bypass in specialised centres: typically 0.2-0.3% (around 2-3 per 1,000 patients) — slightly higher than sleeve due to more complex anatomy. Complication rate 2-5% (anastomotic leak, internal hernias). Risk factors: high BMI, comorbidities, prior abdominal surgeries. A reputable clinic with JCI accreditation and 24/7 emergency infrastructure substantially reduces risk.

Will I have severe vitamin deficiency symptoms after bypass?

Without lifelong supplementation: yes. Anaemia (iron, B12 deficiency), osteoporosis (calcium, vitamin D deficiency), neurological damage (B12, thiamine) — all are documented complications in bypass patients without consistent supplementation. With daily multivitamin + monthly B12 injections + annual blood tests, the risk is very small. This supplementation is NOT optional — you must factor it in seriously.

Will I tolerate alcohol after bypass?

No, differently. Alcohol acts faster and more strongly after bypass — the gastric pouch empties quickly into the small intestine, where alcohol is absorbed directly. Even one glass of wine can feel like 2-3 glasses. "Transfer addiction" (shifting from food addiction to alcohol addiction) is a known risk after bariatric surgery. An honest pre-operative assessment should include addiction history.

What about pregnancy after bypass?

Pregnancy is possible and often safer for mother and child than at the obese starting weight. Recommendation: wait 18-24 months after bypass until weight is stable. During pregnancy, increased vitamin supplementation (especially folic acid, iron, B12) is essential. Internal hernias are a heightened risk during pregnancy — with acute abdominal pain, go to hospital immediately.

What if bypass is not enough and I lose little weight?

Around 5-10% of bypass patients have insufficient weight loss or rapid regain. Causes: anatomical widening of the anastomosis, poor adherence to diet/exercise, hormonal factors. Re-surgery ("bypass revision") is possible but technically very demanding. An honest clinic will inform you about this possibility.

What documents and tests should I send before my trip?

Send recent diagnostic reports (relevant to your procedure: imaging, blood work, specialist letters), your full medication list including supplements, allergy history, and a brief health summary including chronic conditions and prior surgeries. Our medical team reviews these free of charge within 24-48 hours so we can confirm candidacy, finalize the plan and quote a binding price before you book travel.

Risks & Safety Information

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass combines stomach restriction with intestinal rerouting, creating both reduced food intake and mild malabsorption. It is considered the gold standard for patients with severe obesity and metabolic disease.

  • Anastomotic leak at surgical connections (1–2%)
  • Dumping syndrome — nausea, sweating, diarrhea after sugary/fatty foods
  • Internal hernia (2–5%, may require revision surgery)
  • Nutritional deficiencies more significant than with sleeve (requires strict supplementation)
  • Marginal ulcer at the surgical connection site
  • Stricture at the gastrojejunal anastomosis (treatable with endoscopic dilation)
✓ Safety Assurance:

Laparoscopic approach with 5 small incisions. Intraoperative leak testing and meticulous surgical technique minimize anastomotic complications. Enhanced recovery (ERAS) protocols reduce hospital stay and accelerate recovery.

Recovery Timeline

Days 1–3 (Hospital)

Clear liquids. Early mobilization. Pain management. Leak test before diet advancement.

Weeks 1–4

Progressive diet: liquids → purees → soft foods. Protein intake minimum 60–80g daily.

Months 1–3

Gradual return to modified regular diet. Rapid weight loss. Avoid sugar to prevent dumping syndrome.

Months 6–18

Peak weight loss period. Nutritional monitoring essential. Exercise routine established.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Good Candidates

  • BMI 40+ (or BMI 35+ with serious obesity-related diseases)
  • Patients with type 2 diabetes (bypass has highest diabetes remission rates)
  • Those with severe GERD not suitable for sleeve gastrectomy
  • Patients committed to lifelong dietary modifications and follow-up

Not Recommended For

  • Active substance abuse or untreated eating disorders
  • Medical conditions prohibiting general anesthesia
  • Patients unwilling to commit to lifelong vitamin supplementation
  • Those seeking a reversible procedure (bypass is technically reversible but rarely reversed)
