Quick answer: Laser eye surgery recovery with LASIK, Femto-LASIK or SMILE is fast for most patients, who already see much better the next day. After the check-up on the day after the procedure or on the third day, you can usually fly home. Screen work is usually possible again after two to three days, light exercise after about a week, swimming and sauna after two to four weeks. After PRK, healing takes longer. The final go-ahead for every step always comes from the treating eye doctor.

Why recovery differs depending on the method
Laser eye surgery reshapes the cornea so that light once again focuses sharply on the retina. How quickly the eye heals depends on how the laser reaches the corneal tissue.
With LASIK and Femto-LASIK, a thin lid is created in the cornea, the so-called flap. The excimer laser works underneath it, and the flap is then folded back. The surface therefore stays largely intact, which is why many patients see well after just a few hours. The flap, however, needs time to settle firmly. That is why the rule for the first weeks is: no rubbing, no knocks.
With SMILE, no flap is created. A femtosecond laser, for example the Zeiss VisuMax, shapes a small piece of tissue inside the cornea, which is removed through an incision of a few millimetres. Healing is about as fast as with LASIK, but the cornea remains more stable against impact.
With PRK, the outermost cell layer of the cornea is removed and the laser is applied afterwards. This layer has to grow back. That takes a few days and is more uncomfortable during that time. It often takes weeks until vision is stable.
Which method suits you is explained in the article LASIK, SMILE or PRK? An Honest 2026 Guide to Laser Eye Surgery Methods in Turkey.
The day of treatment
The procedure itself takes only a few minutes per eye. Anaesthesia is given with eye drops. Afterwards you rest briefly at the clinic and are taken to your hotel. You are not allowed to drive yourself on that day.
In the first hours, the eyes often burn and water, they are sensitive to light, and vision is blurred. This is normal. It is best to sleep for a few hours. Many patients report that their vision is already much clearer when they wake up.
For the night you usually receive a protective shield so that you do not rub your eyes while asleep. It is generally worn for a few nights.
Days 1 to 3: check-up and flight home
On the day after the procedure or on the third day, the check-up in Istanbul follows. The eye doctor tests your visual acuity, examines the cornea with the slit lamp and, after LASIK, checks the position of the flap. You receive a written plan for the eye drops, which are usually taken for around four weeks according to a fixed schedule.
Only after this check-up and with the doctor's approval do you fly home. The pressure in the cabin does not harm the treated eye. The air on board, however, is very dry. Pack artificial tears in your hand luggage and use them regularly during the flight.
After PRK, the doctor sometimes recommends staying in Istanbul one day longer until the surface has healed sufficiently.
Week 1: back to everyday life
In the first week, vision often still fluctuates slightly, especially in the evening. The eyes are dry and sometimes sensitive to bright light. Sunglasses help outdoors.
Short periods at a screen are usually possible from the second or third day after LASIK and SMILE. Take regular breaks, because we blink less at a screen, and that increases dryness. Most patients return to office work within the first week. Work involving dust, dirt or chemicals is better postponed for one to two weeks.
Showering and washing your hair are allowed as long as no water or shampoo gets into the eye. Eye make-up usually only after about 7 to 10 days.
Weeks 2 to 4: sport, swimming, sauna
Light exercise without water and without contact to the eye, for example jogging or cycling, is usually possible after about one week.
With martial arts and ball sports that carry a risk of impact, patience matters. After LASIK, many eye doctors wait about four weeks, because a blow can displace the flap. After SMILE, an earlier return is often possible, because no flap is created.
Swimming pools, the sea and saunas are usually allowed again after two to four weeks. Until then, germs and chlorine can reach the healing cornea.
Months 1 to 3: fine-tuning and aftercare
Visual acuity usually stabilises within a few weeks after LASIK and SMILE; after PRK it can take up to three months.
Halos and glare at night are often more noticeable in the first weeks. In most patients they fade over time. Dry eyes are the most common complaint in this phase. Preservative-free artificial tears help.
Check-ups are usual after about one week, one month and three months. You can have these done by your eye doctor at home. For this you receive a report on the procedure. For treatments coordinated by Mapa Health, 12 months of aftercare are included in the package, and Mapa Health remains your contact for any questions to the partner clinic.
The myth of "perfect the next morning"
Many providers advertise with the line that you will see perfectly the next morning. For many patients it is true that vision on the first day is already very good. Perfect and stable, however, it often becomes only after a few weeks. After PRK it takes even longer.
Promising a specific dioptre result is just as dubious. No eye doctor can commit to an exact outcome, because healing differs slightly in every eye. In some cases a small residual error remains, which can be treated once healing is complete. The serious approach is to discuss this possibility openly beforehand.
When to call an eye doctor immediately
Increasing pain instead of easing discomfort.
Suddenly much worse vision.
Severe redness, pus or increasing sensitivity to light.
A blow or knock to the treated eye, especially in the first weeks after LASIK.
In these cases, contact a local eye doctor immediately and also inform Mapa Health so that the partner clinic can be involved.
Who should approach recovery with caution
An honest coordinator also says for whom the process does not run as smoothly as in the brochure.
If you already have dry eyes before the procedure, it often takes longer until your eyes feel comfortable. With very severe dryness, laser eye surgery is sometimes not suitable at all.
If you drive a lot at night for work, you should plan the first period with possible halos in mind.
If you practise martial arts, SMILE or PRK is often a better choice than LASIK.
If you want to combine the laser treatment with a short trip, you should not plan swimming in the sea or dusty excursions for the first few days.

Frequently Asked Questions
When can I fly home after laser eye surgery?
After LASIK, Femto-LASIK or SMILE, usually after the check-up on the day after the procedure or on the third day, once the eye doctor agrees. After PRK, the doctor sometimes recommends an extra day in Istanbul. Cabin pressure does not harm the treated eye, but the dry air can cause burning; artificial tears help.
When can I work at a screen again after laser eye surgery?
Short periods at a screen are usually possible from the second or third day after LASIK and SMILE. Most patients return to office work within the first week. After PRK it often takes a week or longer, because the corneal surface heals more slowly.
When can I exercise after laser eye surgery?
Light exercise without water and without contact to the eye is usually possible after about one week. Martial arts and ball sports with a risk of impact only once the eye doctor gives the all-clear, often after about four weeks with LASIK and usually sooner with SMILE, because no flap is created.
When can I swim and use a sauna after laser eye surgery?
Swimming pools, the sea and saunas usually only after two to four weeks, depending on the method and how healing progresses. Until then, germs and chlorine could reach the healing cornea.
When can I drive again after laser eye surgery?
Only once the eye doctor confirms at a check-up that your visual acuity meets the legal requirements. After LASIK and SMILE this is often the case after a few days, after PRK later. At night, halos can be more noticeable in the first weeks.
Is it normal for my eyes to feel dry after laser treatment?
Yes. Dry eyes are among the most common complaints in the first weeks and months. They are treated with artificial tears and improve over time in most patients. After SMILE, dryness is on average slightly less pronounced than after LASIK.
How does aftercare work once I am back home?
Check-ups are usual after about one week, one month and three months, ideally with your eye doctor at home. You receive a written eye drop schedule and a report. If you have questions, Mapa Health stays in contact with you and the partner clinic in Istanbul.
