Veneers or Crowns in Turkey? What "Shaved Teeth" Really Means

Veneers or Crowns in Turkey? What "Shaved Teeth" Really Means

Transparency notice: This guide is published by Mapa Health, a health tourism agency licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health (licence AK-0456). We coordinate dental treatment in Istanbul and are paid for that coordination. Please read this as information from a provider, not as an independent review.

Quick answer

Veneers or crowns: a veneer is a thin ceramic shell bonded to the front of a tooth, while a crown covers the whole tooth and needs much more of it to be ground away. On a healthy front tooth, that difference is not cosmetic, it is permanent. The decision belongs to the dentist after an examination and X-rays, not to a package or a price list. Mapa Health (licence AK-0456) coordinates treatment with a partner clinic in Istanbul, and the treating dentist decides which restoration your teeth actually need.

At a glance

Veneer: a thin shell on the front surface, usually with little enamel removed.
Crown: covers the entire tooth, a large part of the tooth structure is removed.
Ground-down tooth structure does not grow back.
Material used by our partner clinic: IPS e.max lithium disilicate ceramic.
Who decides: the treating dentist, after examination and X-rays.
Mapa Health on Trustpilot: 4.5 out of 5 from 108 verified reviews.

What a veneer is and what a crown is

A veneer is a thin layer of ceramic bonded to the visible front surface of a tooth. It changes colour, shape and small irregularities. The back of the tooth and most of its sides stay untouched.

A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of the tooth. To make room for it, the tooth is reduced on all sides. Crowns have a clear medical purpose: a tooth that is heavily broken down, has a large old filling or has had root canal treatment often needs the protection a crown gives.

The problem is not crowns. The problem is crowns on healthy teeth that only needed a change of colour or shape.

If you want to know how veneers are planned and placed step by step, our guide to dental veneers in Turkey explains the process.

How much tooth is removed

A frequently cited laboratory study compared how much tooth structure different preparations remove on front teeth. Full crowns removed roughly 63 to 72 percent of the tooth structure above the gum line. Veneers removed roughly 3 to 30 percent, depending on the design (Edelhoff and Sorensen, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 2002).

That is the whole debate in two numbers. Enamel and dentine that are ground away do not grow back. A tooth that has been prepared for a crown will need a crown, or a replacement crown, for the rest of its life, and every replacement removes a little more.

Where "Turkey teeth" comes from

In the UK, "Turkey teeth" has become a term for very white, very uniform smiles that look artificial. Dental tourism among UK patients keeps growing, according to the British Dental Association (Dental Tribune UK), and UK dentists have spoken publicly about patients who come back with sensitive, painful or over-treated teeth.

Behind many of these cases is not the country but a method: a full set of crowns placed on teeth that were healthy, often within a few days and often planned from photos rather than an examination. The same problem exists wherever teeth are over-prepared. It is avoidable.

The myth that crowns are simply stronger veneers

A sentence some patients hear in sales conversations: "We will do crowns instead of veneers, they last longer." It sounds like an upgrade. On a healthy tooth, it is the opposite.

A crown may be the more robust restoration, but it protects nothing on a tooth that did not need protection. It trades a large part of a healthy tooth for a cover. If a veneer chips in ten years, it can often be replaced with little further loss. If a crown fails on a heavily reduced tooth, the next step can be root canal treatment or, in the worst case, losing the tooth.

When someone shows us an offer for 20 crowns on teeth that only need whitening or a few veneers, our first question is: did a dentist examine these teeth and take X-rays before that plan was written? If the answer is no, it is a sales plan, not a treatment plan.

Why our partner clinic uses IPS e.max

Our partner clinic in Istanbul uses IPS e.max, a lithium disilicate glass ceramic made by Ivoclar. It is one of the most widely used materials for veneers and single crowns on front teeth. Because it combines strength with translucency, it can be made thin, which allows conservative preparation where the case permits it.

The material does not make the decision, though. A thin, well-designed e.max veneer and an unnecessarily heavy e.max crown can come from the same block. What matters is how much of your tooth is removed to place it, and that is a clinical decision.

How e.max compares with zirconia, the other widely used ceramic, is explained in our article Zirconia or E.max? The Difference Explained Simply.

Who decides: the dentist, not the package

At Mapa Health we do not sell veneers or crowns as a fixed package before a dentist has seen your teeth. Photos help with a first assessment, but the treatment plan is made by the treating dentist after an examination and X-rays in Istanbul.

That plan can be different from what you asked for. Sometimes a patient asks for veneers and the dentist recommends whitening, bonding or orthodontic treatment first. Sometimes a tooth that looked healthy in a photo turns out to need a crown because of an old root canal or a large filling. The honest answer is the one that fits your teeth, not the one that fits the original request.

Our position at Mapa Health is simple: a healthy tooth should lose only as much structure as the treatment truly requires. A smile that looks good for a few years and costs you healthy teeth is not a good result.

Who is not a good candidate for veneers or crowns

Gum disease: inflamed or receding gums need treatment first. Restorations on unhealthy gums fail sooner.
Untreated decay: decay and leaking fillings must be treated before anything is bonded on top.
Heavy grinding or clenching (bruxism): ceramics can chip or crack. A night guard and a careful plan are needed, and sometimes veneers are not advisable at all.
Too little enamel: veneers bond best to enamel. Where it is very thin or worn, the dentist may advise a different solution.
Unrealistic expectations: asking for the whitest possible shade or a perfectly uniform row of teeth often leads to the artificial look patients later regret.

Alternatives worth asking about

Professional whitening changes colour without removing any tooth structure.
Composite bonding can close small gaps or repair chipped edges with little or no preparation.
Orthodontic treatment, for example with aligners, can straighten teeth instead of hiding their position under ceramic.
For a missing tooth, a dental implant from an established manufacturer such as Straumann or Nobel Biocare is a different treatment altogether and needs its own assessment.

Questions to ask in writing before you book

Which teeth will receive veneers, which will receive crowns, and why each one?
How much tooth structure will be removed on each tooth?
Will a dentist examine me and take X-rays before the plan is final?
Which material and which dental laboratory will be used?
What is the plan if a veneer chips or a crown loosens after I return home?
Is the agency licensed by the Ministry of Health, and what is the licence number?

Mapa Health operates under licence AK-0456. Get the answers in writing. A plan that cannot explain why a healthy tooth needs a crown is a plan to question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do they shave your teeth for veneers?

Usually a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front surface; in some cases very little. For crowns, the tooth is reduced on all sides, which removes far more structure. How much is right for you is decided by the dentist after an examination.

Can a ground-down tooth grow back?

No. Enamel and dentine that are removed do not regenerate. That is why preparing healthy teeth for crowns is a decision for life.

What is e.max?

IPS e.max is a lithium disilicate glass ceramic made by Ivoclar. Our partner clinic uses it for veneers and crowns because it is strong and translucent and can be made thin.

How long do veneers last?

Well-made ceramic veneers can last many years. The lifespan depends on your bite, grinding, oral hygiene and regular check-ups. No honest provider can promise a fixed number of years.

Who decides whether I need veneers or crowns?

The treating dentist, after an examination and X-rays. Mapa Health coordinates your treatment but does not replace the dentist's clinical judgement.

Can I get veneers if I have gum disease?

Usually not straight away. Gum disease and decay need to be treated first, otherwise the restorations are likely to fail sooner.

Will the NHS or my insurance pay for veneers?

Usually not, because veneers are mostly a cosmetic treatment. Check directly with your insurer before you book.

How do I recognise a legitimate agency?

By a licence from the Turkish Ministry of Health, a named dentist, an examination before the final plan and written answers to your questions. Mapa Health operates under licence AK-0456 and is rated 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot.
