Veneers Turkey vs Hungary: An Honest Comparison for UK Patients

NHS rules after Brexit, trips, materials and real cost: veneers in Turkey or Hungary for UK patients, compared honestly by Mapa Health.

Veneers Turkey vs Hungary: An Honest Comparison for UK Patients

Transparency notice: This guide is written by Mapa Health, a patient coordinator for treatment in Istanbul licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health (licence AK-0456). We arrange treatment in Turkey, not in Hungary. If you are weighing veneers Turkey vs Hungary, you should still get a fair answer, including where Hungary is the better choice.

Quick answer

For a full set of cosmetic veneers, a smile makeover or Hollywood Smile, Turkey is the more practical choice for most UK patients. The NHS pays for cosmetic veneers in neither country, and since Brexit there is no refund route for private dental work in Hungary either. In our experience prices in Hungary sit noticeably above Turkish prices. Hungary makes sense if you prefer a clinic with a long track record of British patients, a slightly shorter flight, or treatment inside the EU.

At a glance

NHS and cosmetic veneers: not funded in England, whether at home or abroad.
NHS refund for private dental work in Hungary: no, the EU cross-border route closed for UK patients at the end of 2020.
NHS refund for treatment in Turkey: no.
Cost of a full set: in our experience usually clearly lower in Turkey, flights and hotel included.
Flight time from London: about two and a half hours to Budapest, about four hours to Istanbul.
Mapa Health rating: 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 108 verified reviews, more than 500 patients since 2020.

What the NHS pays, and what changed after Brexit

Cosmetic veneers are not part of NHS dental care in England. If you want veneers to change the shape or colour of healthy teeth, you pay privately, at home or abroad.

Before Brexit, UK patients could claim back part of the cost of some planned treatment in another EU country under the cross-border healthcare rules. That route closed for UK residents at the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020. The S2 route that remains covers planned treatment with public providers, not private dental clinics. In practice, the NHS does not reimburse private dental work in Hungary, in Turkey, or anywhere else.

For UK patients this removes the one insurance argument that German patients still have for Hungary. The choice comes down to quality, logistics and cost.

A common misconception: Turkey teeth are veneers

The phrase Turkey teeth became known in the UK through television and social media, usually showing very white teeth that had been ground down for crowns. Many of those cases were not veneers at all. A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of the tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth and needs far more of it removed.

Whether you travel to Budapest or to Istanbul, ask in writing whether you are getting veneers or crowns, and how much tooth structure will be removed. Mapa Health tells you this before you book. Read more in Veneers or crowns in Turkey: what shaved teeth really means.

One trip or two? The process compared

Veneers take several steps: examination and planning, preparing the teeth, temporaries, laboratory work, a try-in and final bonding. How many visits this needs depends less on the country than on whether the laboratory works on site and how many teeth are treated.

For a full set in Istanbul, Mapa Health plans all steps in one stay of around four days. Clinics in Hungary work in different ways, some in one block, others with two appointments a few weeks apart. Ask how many trips are planned and what happens if something does not fit at the try-in.

From the UK both countries mean a flight. Budapest is closer, but the difference is roughly an hour and a half each way, and many UK airports have direct flights to both cities.

Materials and laboratory: what matters in both countries

Whether veneers look natural and last is decided in the laboratory. The material and the experience of the dental technician matter in Budapest exactly as they do in Istanbul. Common materials are lithium disilicate such as IPS e.max, and zirconia. We explain the difference in Zirconia or E.max.

In both countries, ask for a written statement naming the material and the dental laboratory. If implants are part of the plan, the manufacturer should be fixed in writing, for example Straumann or Nobel Biocare. Mapa Health gives you these details before you travel.

Aftercare back in the UK

If work done abroad needs to be corrected, the treating clinic is usually responsible, which means another trip. The NHS will treat a dental emergency such as an infection, but it does not fund revisions of veneers or crowns placed abroad. Some UK private dentists are reluctant to adjust work done elsewhere.

This applies equally to Hungary and Turkey. Mapa Health agrees in writing before treatment under which conditions corrections are made and who pays for the travel. Whatever country you choose, get the correction terms in writing before you book.

The cost difference, calculated fairly

Based on the enquiries Mapa Health receives from the UK, a full set of veneers in Hungary costs noticeably more than in Turkey. Public price comparisons from 2026 put E.max veneers in Turkey roughly 20 to 35 percent below Hungarian prices per tooth. Both countries are a fraction of UK private fees.

Count flights and hotel in both cases, and a possible second trip. With eight or more veneers the difference remains clear in our experience. With a single crown it often disappears. Prices for Turkey are on our page on dental veneers in Turkey. An offer far below the market in either country is a warning sign, not a bargain.

Experience and volume: why Turkey is a centre

Turkey is one of the largest destinations for medical treatment in the world. According to the state company USHAŞ, around 1.4 million international health tourists came to Turkey in 2025. Dentistry is one of the fields where many specialists work mainly with international patients.

That volume has two sides. Experienced dentists in Istanbul place full sets of veneers very regularly. At the same time, the gap between very good and poor providers is wide. Our position at Mapa Health is clear: Turkey is not the right choice because it is cheap, but because it has dentists with very large experience in full cosmetic work. That experience only helps you if you end up with one of them. We therefore work only with clinics whose dentists, laboratory and materials we know, and we tell you before you travel who will treat you.

Who Hungary suits better

Hungary is the better choice if you value a clinic with many years of British patients, prefer to be treated inside the EU, or want the shortest possible flight for several visits. It can also suit patients who need mainly crowns or bridges rather than cosmetic veneers and want to compare several European offers.

Who Turkey suits better

Turkey suits you if you plan a full cosmetic set, from several veneers up to a Hollywood Smile, want to finish in one stay, and the cost difference on a large case matters to you. Mapa Health, licensed under AK-0456, coordinates the clinic, laboratory, transfers and correction terms.

Who should not have veneers in either country

Veneers are not suitable with untreated gum disease, heavy night-time grinding without a splint, or very little healthy tooth structure. If your teeth are only slightly discoloured and otherwise healthy, consider whitening first. A responsible dentist tells you this in Hungary as well as in Turkey. More in our dental veneers guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the NHS pay for veneers abroad?

No. Cosmetic veneers are not NHS treatment in England, and the NHS does not reimburse private dental work abroad, whether in Hungary or in Turkey.

Can I still claim money back for dental work in Hungary after Brexit?

In practice no. The EU cross-border route closed for UK residents at the end of 2020, and the S2 route covers public providers, not private dental clinics.

Is Turkey or Hungary cheaper for a Hollywood Smile?

In Mapa Health's experience a full set is usually clearly cheaper in Turkey, even with flights and hotel. For a single crown the difference is small.

How many trips do I need for veneers?

In Istanbul, Mapa Health plans a full set in one stay of around four days. In Hungary some clinics also work in one block, others with two appointments.

Will my UK dentist fix problems with veneers done abroad?

The NHS treats dental emergencies such as infections, but does not fund revision of veneers placed abroad. Agree the correction terms with the treating clinic in writing before treatment.

Who wrote this comparison?

Mapa Health, a licensed coordinator for treatment in Turkey (licence AK-0456). We wrote it because patients ask this question, and that is why we also say when Hungary fits better.
